So, you are having a party. Planning can be tough, but one area that can make it easier is whether to hire a Disc Jockey or to book a band. While pretty much everything else you do has many choices, this area only has 2 options. Do you want live music or listen to recordings that you and all of your guests hear all day, every day? There are benefits to each choice, but live music is ultimately the better option.

Many people just choose a Disc Jockey, simply because it is easy. You need music, they provide music, game over! However, unless they offer a never ending supply of musical options, you are limited to what recordings they have, whether they fit the occasion or not.

If your guests are varied in age, the available music from a DJ, could be a challenge. Another consideration is their sound system. Depending on where you have your gathering, the in house sound system may or may not be sufficient to give you quality sound.

The theme of your party has usually been fairly thought out. Your DJ may or may not have music to accommodate this choice. Most of the time, they have several hundred commonly played songs to make it through the day. Depending on the type of music you wish played, there are always live musicians who will accommodate your wishes.

You may use an agent to find your band or you will be able to visit local clubs to see them in action. This way, you get to see how they interact with their customers and how their performances are received. This can add some fun to the choosing of your group, as the better entertainers you find, the better the party will proceed.

Finding groups that suit your needs may be a little tougher, but in the long run, their presence will have a bigger impact on the party than anyone else. There are agents that will direct you to venues where local talent is playing. You get to see them in action to determine their sound, how they interact with the customers and their personalities. A DJ is really at a location to do nothing more than spin records, although now it is more of anything but records, and is not really there as entertainment.

If budget is a major hurdle, you may be limited with your choices and perhaps a DJ will be less expensive, but the overall performance and appreciation from your guests will justify the additional expense. Consider if there are times when songs are being done as part of the party. In other words, perhaps a first dance or introductions. A live band will be able to handle all of those circumstances easier than constantly interrupting a recording.

Your choices are wide open and depending on the size of your venue, when you book a band, you have more control and more options. Maybe there will be one family member or friend who has aspirations to be a superstar and you really do not wish to have your party turn into a karaoke contest, but singing with a band will offer them a great chance to test out their pipes and give you a resounding performance. And, by the way, have a great time at the party.
