Different PEX Fittings Methods Used In PEX Water Delivery Systems

PEX is a water plumbing system constructed from high density polyethylene tubes. Special PEX Fittings are used to connect PEX tubing. PEX tubing is a flexible material that is easier and cheaper to install, is resistant to corrosion and requires fewer fittings than older plumbing systems.

In cold temperatures PEX tubes retain their flexibility and do not become brittle and break. Unlike metal pipes, PEX tubing will not corrode and will not develop scales. PEX tubing is energy efficient as well because they will not conduct heat.

PEX tubing is weaved around spools. Using spools is cost efficient because of their lower weight and ease of storage. They cost less to ship than other types of pipes. PEX tubing can be installed directly from the spools with no need for coupling fittings. There is also no need for elbow joints because the flexibility of PEX tubing allows it to be turned to a 90 degree angle. Installation is easy and quick. There are no fumes and safety risks from soldering because there is no soldering involved when you use PEX materials.

There are a variety of connection methods used in installing PEX systems. Some of these methods are proprietary and some require special tools. Basically, the fitting is inserted over the tube or in the tube and then a ring or clamp is crimped around the tube or fitting forming a tight fit. The rings can be made of various metals or plastic depending on he connection method.

The tools you will use when installing PEX are a PEX pipe cutter, a main crimping tool and a de-crimping tool. The PEX pipe cutter comes in different sizes for 1/2″ and 3/4″ size tubes. Rings are crimped using the crimping tool. The de-crimping tool is used for removing rings from tubes or fittings.

The most common material used to make fittings is brass. However, you can find fittings made from other metals and even plastic. Fittings have ridges that when crimped make a high-pressure seal.

It is clear that using PEX tubing with PEX fittings has important advantages over metal and rigid plastic systems. It costs less. It is easier and faster to install. Its resistance to corrosion and scale makes it last longer.
